THE SAHASRARA CHAKRA
The Seventh Chakra is called the Sahasrara Chakra. Sahasrara means ‘thousand petalled’, and refers to the flowering of enlightenment that happens when this chakra is activated. The Seventh Chakra is located on the crown of the head. This is the ‘crowning glory’ of spiritual quest, and may link with pictures of haloes, depicted around saints. Physically it relates to higher brain functions and interface with Spirit. It is linked with the colour violet.
THE SEVENTH CHAKRA CONCERNS
- Awareness of spiritual meanings
SIGNS THAT YOUR CROWN CHAKRA NEEDS CLEARING.
If you find it hard to accept mysticism, transcendence and spiritual reality, if you can’t imagine being lifted up into other worlds and your being expanding to meet the stars, then your Crown Chakra may need attention. Obviously states of true transcendence take work and dedication, but the first step is to be open to them.
Do you find it hard to believe that you could be a channel for the Divine? That you might truly experience the meaning of existence? The essence of the Crown Chakra is hard to convey, because we are leaving the material behind and coming close to pure spirit – but are you able to be open to this? If not, your Crown Chakra may need attention.
When your Crown Chakra isn’t functioning well you are blocking all possibilities of expanding consciousness and union with the Source. It will help if you can at least acknowledge that there are higher meanings, that the world may really be radiant with celestial light, and that one day you will appreciate this.
DAMAGE TO YOUR CROWN CHAKRA
Religious doctrine has done a great deal of damage to the quest for mysticism. Even though mystics have emerged in all religions, they have often been regarded with suspicion, and even martyred. Unfortunately the urge for power and control rather than union with the Divine has directed too much that passes for ‘religion’. Mystical states are now regarded as dubious by science, and may be regarded as even needing medication!
The awareness of ‘meaning’ given by the Crown Chakra makes little sense unless you already have some idea about it. This kind of experience is so far outside the ideas of Western culture that we do not have the words to convey it. Eastern cultures have this vocabulary, but for the materialistic Westerner they are not easily grasped.
There are few guidelines for the average person who is seeking transcendence. Disciplines such as mindfulness have been cut off from their spiritual roots and prescribed as a therapy for tension. However, in isolated cases, mindfulness has been known to trigger mental disturbance. Small wonder, when there is no frame of reference for the experiences that may come through.
Working with the Crown Chakra opens the way into the spiritual realms. If you have done good work with your other chakras and are confident about your awareness, the Crown Chakra is the next step. So much the better if you are working with this under the guidance of an expert teacher, or within a spiritual framework.
STRENGTHENING YOUR CROWN CHAKRA
With the Crown Chakra we are now within the spirit realms, and seeking an awareness that is totally beyond the everyday. This is more than intuition and far sight, and can even transcend karma. To strengthen your Crown Chakra try the following:
- Cultivate a totally open mind about what reality is
- Consider spending time in an ashram or spiritual retreat
- Study the writings of saints and mystics
- Be aware of when your mind is working too hard. Logic and analysis are barriers to the mystical
- Accept your thoughts, but realise you are not your thoughts
- Realise that spirit and matter are not separate
- Accept that there are mysteries that logic will never explain
- Work on awareness that you are one with each flower, tree, river, mountain and each star in the sky
BECOME AWARE OF YOUR CROWN CHAKRA
Opening your chakras is a significant step on your spiritual path. However, doing this takes time, so start with simply becoming aware of your Crown Chakra. Lie down and relax. Concentrate on this chakra, imagining its beautiful violet colour and then feeling it drawing energy up through your root chakra, second chakra, third chakra, fourth chakra, fifth chakra and sixth ckakra.
Feel your crown centre empowered, its wonderful violet light showing all of existence in the light of spirit. This light may shade into white as the chakra blossoms. Just continue to relax, and when you’re ready, affirm that all seven chakras are closing by visualising this strongly. Take a drink of water and touch your palms to the earth, to ensure the chakras are closed and you are properly grounded.
Now you have arrived at your Crown Chakra it is doubly important that you ensure you are fully closed down. The best idea is to find a spiritual teacher who can advise you.
