TAKE SOME SPACE
…and if that mere suggestion makes you react with ‘Oh, no, I don’t have time!’ then you need it desperately! The world won’t come to an end and none of those vital jobs will go undone if you take five. Concentrate on your breathing and your body, relaxing completely and imagining you are in a beautiful place. Even better, have a fifteen minute walk. You will be more relaxed and productive.
IDENTIFY WHAT’S MOST DIFFICULT
Sometimes in the whirl of life we can lose the plot. Is there some task, or person, that s truly overshadowing you? If so, what can you do about this? It’s your life – how are you going to organise it, to be as happy as possible?
Be aware of what’s most important to you, the most vital jobs etc. and put these at the head of your list. You’ll find it easier to relax if the essentials are under your belt.
You may think you can do several things at once, but in reality you are causing yourself unnecessary stress and becoming less efficient and more wound-up as a result. The brain can’t do two of the same kinds of things at once, and even when you are doubling-up on compatible activities, such as walking and speaking on the phone, you could still limit the quality of the experience. For instance, how can you enjoy the beauties of nature, breathe deep and unwind if you’re talking dates and deadlines? Even a call to a friend will distract you. So review your attempts to multitask and only do it when you are sure nothing is being impaired.
If you expect too much of yourself then you are setting yourself up to fail. In turn, that makes you feel bad about yourself, increases your stress and limits your efficiency. That can result in a downward spiral that you are so caught up in you aren’t aware of what’s happening. You are only one person, and there are limits to what you can do – fact. There are only 24 hours in the day – fact. So delegate where you can, even if it’s only one or two simple jobs, and don’t feel bad because you’re putting things off. Okay, so you haven’t written your novel or attended that art class, but you aren’t procrastinating, you’re just busy. It won’t always be like this.
BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF
Forgive yourself for not completing some stuff, for messing up, under-performing or forgetting. Be your own best mate. Talk to yourself with kindness and understanding, and remind yourself of all you have achieved. Actually, you’re doing really well – remember this.
