Embracing May Day 2016 for Personal Growth

The first day of summer and historically a fertile time for planting our crops. What can May Day 2016 bring to you? Sew your seeds for the future

What is May Day and when is May Day? May Day is celebrated on the 1st May 2016 and is an ancient spring festival for the northern hemisphere. It is May Day bank holiday, celebrated by singing, music, dance and cakes. May Day was specifically chosen by socialists, communists of the Second International, to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago, and was named International Workers Day. Customary English May Day celebrations include the traditional maypole and Morris dancing. So what is May Day and what happens on this yearly event? This is a time when towns and villages plan once a year to celebrate springtime, fertile soil, livestock and people. It is rejoiced by community spirit, carrying out village fetes. Farmers have usually seeded their crops by this time and therefore it is a day that shows appreciation to hard-working farmers with a day off, or more commonly known as the May day bank holiday. The May Queen (and sometimes King) are chosen by the village people, and they gather flowers and donations, often accompanied by song.

Still to this day, in most English villages and towns you will see a maypole with ribbons attached and Morris dancers around it…

WHEN IS MAY DAY 2016 IN ENGLAND

May Day this year, is Sunday the 1st of May.  In ancient times, the Celts divided up their year by the seasons and celebrated them by four different festivals. ‘Beltane’ is the May Day festival, and ‘the fire of the Bel’ is recognised by bonfires to welcome the first day of summer. Still to this day, in most English villages and towns you will see a maypole with ribbons attached and Morris dancers around it. In the 1600’s, May day bank holiday celebration was banned because it’s pagan roots were not very popular with the established church, riots broke out and fourteen protesters were hanged. Henry VIII is believed to have pardoned another 400 rioters, who had been sentenced to death.

It was developed to advocate renewal, rebirth and heavily promote revival…

INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY & LABOUR DAY

On May Day 2016, International Workers Day, also known as Labour Day, celebrations will take place around the world. This day is honoured by labourers and the working class, promoted by the international labour movement, socialists, anarchists and communists. The origin of International Workers Day or Labour Day rests in the fight for an eight hour working in which the leaders of the Second International requested an international day of protest to be in held in May 1890. The UK demonstration took place and in Hyde Park, London alone – attracted 300,000 protesters. It was originally intended to be a one-off protest but it created a boom of trade unionism. It was developed to advocate renewal, rebirth and heavily promote revival. It showed support by celebrating with art, sporting events, heavy drinking and eating indulgence, flags and badges.

The rituals, marked with feasts and festivals were carried out to promote fertility…

SPIRITUAL MEANING OF MAY DAY 2016

So what is May Day in spiritual terms? The Fire Festival of Beltane is celebrated every year on May Day. It begins at moonrise on May Day eve and marks the start of the third quarter of the ancient Celtic year. The pagans celebrated it as a pastoral festival alongside the first time in the year where herds were released in to the pastures. The cattle were guided between the Belfires to protect them from ill health because it was believed that near contact with fire was symbolic of contact with the sun. The rituals, marked with feasts and festivals were carried out to promote fertility. Flowers and greenery were gathered at dawn and used to decorate villages. Here are some interesting facts about May Day and Beltane:

  • Beltane rituals include romantic intentions by young couples. The collecting of flowers and lighting of fires would often lead to courting and marriages in the coming summer.
  • Celtic festivals would involve the needs of the local community. At the beginning of the farming year, everyone would be hopeful for a successful and fruitful yield.
  • Beltane is a Celtic work meaning ‘fires of Bel’ (Bel is a Celtic deity). Fire is symbolic of cleansing, purifying and promoting an increase of fertility in the ground.
  • Beltane has a sexual theme to the festivals, and although it does not include sexual rituals, the dancing around the maypole has sexual reference and promotes sex and fertility.
  • The most well-known Beltane celebration in the UK is in Edinburgh. Fires are lit and celebration and festivities continue until dawn.
