Guilty or Not Guilty? Our Guilty Pleasures

All of us have our guilty pleasures. The things in life that please us, make us feel good or better about ourselves. They are the small things that release the happy endorphins within. We often name them as our ‘guilty pleasures’ because for some reason we feel we need to have an excuse for treating ourselves. This guilty pleasure meaning is often used when we feel that something is a luxury and may not generally be regarded highly by others. It might be something we love but we don’t necessarily tell people about easily, or something that is pleasurable but that may make you feel guilty. The term seems to give us a way of justifying ourselves to others. It may be something which we feel embarrassed about because we feel it is overindulgent, but which is possibly in fact only seen that way in our own eyes.

Is it simply a term used to admit something that you like?

WHAT IS A GUILTY PLEASURE?

Perhaps a guilty pleasure is something which is more about making ourselves feel better. It shouldn’t be something we are ashamed of or a pastime which we worry may be judged by others. The guilty pleasure meaning is not clearly defined, nor do we know where it originally came from. Is it simply a term used to admit something that you like? If you were to make a list of guilty pleasures, it would be most likely different to the person next to you. So in essence it is based on things we like, little treats we give ourselves and really, it’s not much to feel guilty about. However, because the phrase is used so widely, what might be one person’s guilty pleasures, may not be understood by others.

We allow ourselves guilty pleasures to indulge and spoil ourselves, there’s nothing wrong with that.

COMMON GUILTY PLEASURES!

How many times have you heard friends or work colleagues say ‘oh it’s my guilty pleasure!’ as if they’ve just let you in to a big secret in their life? We allow ourselves guilty pleasures to indulge and spoil ourselves, there’s nothing wrong with that. Find below a typical list of guilty pleasures and see if you agree with any of them!

  • Favourite TV programme that you watch regularly - Is this a guilty pleasure? Maybe it is just something you enjoy watching and like the time to switch off from everything!
  • Chocolate treats or sweet things - Why do you feel guilty? Because you know they are not very healthy for you and you worry that you may put on weight? Surely in moderation, it’s okay.
  • Two glasses of wine in the evening - Okay we all know that alcohol isn’t great for you, but as long as you are not overindulging, drinking plenty of water and still looking after your health, it’s not such a bad thing. Perhaps make sure you have a few nights off alcohol each week!
  • Reading a good book or sifting through magazines – we all need our wind down time out, a moment of escapism from our busy lives is actually quite important.
  • Sport or activity – as we know exercise is an important part of life and most of us should be doing more! Engaging in activities outside of work is good for endorphins and releases stress, creates more energy. Embrace it, it’s not a guilty pleasure!
  • A hobby – whether its knitting, crafting, playing a musical instrument or gardening. It’s always a good thing to have a hobby and not everyone has one. Indulge your creative outlet and enjoy it.

So what is a guilty pleasure really about? A list of guilty pleasures can be limitless, and it’s really down to you to decide whether they are such a thing to be guilty about. However, perhaps we take it too seriously and it’s just a phrase that we all use? We are all different and therefore the guilty pleasure meaning can be used so extensively because our opinions differ from person to person.  Unless it’s something which offends or harms others, it’s really nothing to feel guilty about.
