The best traditions are based on sound psychology. Getting busy with the duster can blow the cobwebs out of your mind. Allowing you to let go off the dark, cold winter and get prepared for the energetic, sunny spring to come.
Spring has sprung
It has always been natural for humans to live in tune with the seasons. This is not simply about sowing and reaping – we are also influenced by the specific energy of the time of year, and it is healthy to harmonise with it. In Spring the earth is renewed, the soil ready for vibrant growth. If you want to bring exciting new elements into your life, do what folk have done all down through history – clean up and clear out.
A cluttered home leads to difficulty in concentration and can make you feel overwhelmed and out of control. It also wastes time, as you take ages to find what you need, and sometimes fail to locate it altogether! What’s the use of possessions that are inaccessible or tripping you up? If you find it hard to throw things out, ask yourself who’s boss, you or that old stuff? Space is also a commodity, and much more valuable.
Top Tips to de-clutter:
You will need to plan how and where you are going to store the articles that you decide to keep. Be creative. Use loft space to best advantage, place shelves in your garage or expand into the garden shed. Do you have room underneath beds? Are your cupboards efficient, or could you have taller ones that still leave you with your floor-space? How about chairs with storage under the seats? Where possible, stash fabrics in bought vacuum-packs that you make airless using your vacuum cleaner. Make sure you arrange articles so that those you are most likely to need are easiest to reach.
Cleaning is part of home-making and not to be sneered at. Be a Domestic Goddess and banish grime. Set yourself manageable standards – you’re not going to look behind the fridge! When you’re satisfied that your home is physically clean, do this on the psychic level also. Kit out a tray with a bowl of water, a bowl of salt, a lavender joss stick, a candle and a duster. In each room open the window and wave the duster, imagining grey wisps of negativity and old issues being swept out. Close the window and take the joss stick around the room, clockwise, saying ‘Be blessed by Air’. Then the candle saying ‘Be blessed by Fire’, followed by the water which you can sprinkle saying ‘Be blessed by Water.’ Finally sprinkle the salt saying ‘Be blessed by Earth.’ When you have completed this task, bless your front door in the same way and ask the Great Mother to protect you this Spring.
The inner you
Remember while you are doing the above activities that you are cleansing your spirit also. As you throw out the trash and clear the dirt, imagine that you are doing the same thing inwardly – getting rid of all the bad feelings that have gathered over the winter. You might even like to name an especially lumpy bag after a particular emotion, such as loss, loneliness or depression. As the dust-cart takes it away, so your spirit is freed. Imagine a bright light above your head, shining down through you like a psychic shower, deep-cleansing your subtle body. See yourself as glowing, new and open to amazing things, just as the spring soil is ready for vibrant, magical new growth so are you.
