International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress women have made over the years, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. Their achievements are endless, in social, economic, cultural and political environments. 
 
We should be inspired by the incredible women around us every day. Women that are constantly multi-tasking, working and building careers, managing homes and raising children - their skills are endless. Women who are involving their neighbours and transforming communities into better places to live. Women like you, your mother, daughter, sister or friend who do more than we can imagine.
 
You are more powerful and stronger than you think, so what new directions could you take to feel empowered and in control of your life? The only thing that might be stopping you is fear, fear of failure and lack of self-belief. This stems from not having confidence in yourself and your abilities, so the first major hurdle to tackle is your self-confidence and not be deterred by others.
 
Women are just as capable as men, if not more, of achieving great things. This may not always have been recognised historically but in today’s world we have far more opportunity to realise our ambitions and reach our full potential. But we need to work on ourselves first to build strength, courage and confidence.
You can start by loving and appreciating yourself, with just a few simple steps:
  • Stop judging yourself and setting standards that are too high or difficult to achieve.  Start with goals that you know you can achieve and reward yourself for completed tasks and jobs well done. This will give you confidence to tackle more challenges outside of your comfort zone
  • Have some ‘me’ time, pamper yourself and relax and feel like you deserve it.  Don’t ever feel guilty for taking time out, no matter how busy you are – it’s essential for your wellbeing. You won’t operate efficiently unless you are properly rested.  Regularly practice meditation or mindfulness and learn to switch off completely
  • Meet your own needs and put yourself first as much as you can. You may have family and work commitments that require you meeting the needs of others for most of the time, but learn to say ‘no’ and do what’s right for you. This is very empowering and good for your self-esteem.
  • Look after your health, what we eat and drink has a huge effect on our emotional wellbeing as well as our physical state. You won’t feel good about yourself if you’re eating unhealthy processed food.  Make the time to prepare some healthy and nutritious meals, you will soon feel the benefit. Add to that some regular exercise and you’ll feel like tackling the world.
Once you have increased your self-confidence and are feeling more empowered, that’s the time to tackle the actions that you might have previously shied away from. Be bold and grasp those challenges with both hands and in the belief that you will succeed. This will give you the confidence boost you need to feel able to achieve bigger and bolder goals.
