Being a mother is often as challenging, if not more so, than being the President of the United States or the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Just consider how many mothers there are in the world, (over 2 billion!), and you will know what a vital role they play in society.
Mums are responsible for seeing to the safety of their children but they are also responsible for raising them up to be functioning members of society. Whether birth mothers or adoptive mothers, every mum knows that she has a responsibility to raise her children so that when the time comes, they are ready to spread their wings and fly out into the big, wide world. This is the same in the animal kingdom. Take a look at meerkat aunts and sisters, for example, who actively help to raise a little one (in the same way that an adoptive mum does), to help make them ready to enter the world.
The bond between a mother and her child is unique, and as you will see in this infographic, the love that they share cannot be compared to anything else. Mothers (both human and animal) are fiercely protective of their young, and will often go to extreme lengths in order to protect them. Just look at the women who endured 75 days of labour upside down in order to give her babies the best chance of survival, or the woman who hauled a cougar off her young daughter whilst hiking in Vancouver.
Being a mother is a huge responsibility and mums around the world should be lauded for the sheer effort and willpower it takes to handle their role, especially in today’s highly complicated high tech world. Whether looking at the role of a mother in the human or animal world, we can all agree that they are special, and willing to do anything it takes to protect their children.
