The teachings of the four elements, fire, earth, air and water, is ancient: Even the Greeks assigned to them all things material and spiritual. In astrology, too, the division of these elements in humans is looked at in natal horoscopes. This concerns the allocation of the houses (each house is assigned to one of the four elements), as well as the basic character of the zodiac signs. Let’s begin with the houses.
You will remember that the inner circle, which is numbered from one to twelve, depicts the houses. We can see that in this radix we have three things attributed to fire (two in the 1st House and one in the 9th), two attributed to earth (both in the 6th House), two to air (in the 7th and 11th Houses) and six to water (two in the 8th House and four in the 12th). An obvious stress on the element water prevails in this person.
Each of the four element signs has three houses assigned to it in the following manner:
House 1, 5 and 9 are assigned to fire
House 2, 6 and 10 are assigned to earth
House 3, 7 and 11 are assigned to air
House 4, 8 and 12 are assigned to water.
Let’s look again at the radix diagram:
The signs of the zodiac are also assigned to the elements. Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius and water signs are Cancer, Scorpion and Pisces.
