Being apart at Christmas is very sad. People are shopping and celebrating together and making plans for family reunions. But the one you most want to be with is many miles away and there’s no hope of a warm Crimbo hug. Don’t despair. One day you’ll look back on the loneliness and longing and realize how much it has made you appreciate one another. Meanwhile you can make the time go quicker and create a connection to your lover by choosing the best possible present and imagining the smiles it’s going to generate.
1) SPECIAL PHOTOS.
You are probably texting and emailing shots of your life, trying to keep your dear one up to date with what’s going on, but how about something that takes more effort and is more special? You could dress in what you wore when you met and pose in that very location. If you share a sense of humour, put on a comic costume. Collect all your shared friends and hold up a banner saying ‘We miss you, …..’ Create a family portrait where you all look your best. You can send these electronically, but depending on the situation, hard copy can be more precious. There’s nothing like having a picture you can touch to keep in your bag or breast-pocket.
Send your lover a special scent. No, this doesn’t mean the favourite perfume or aftershave, but a memory-jerking aroma. Smell is the most primitive of the senses and has an effect on the brain-stem evoking memories more powerfully than any other sense. Did you meet regularly in a coffee- bar? Coffee beans carry a powerful aroma. Maybe you both love lavender, lemons – or cup-cakes! Many scents can be found in wax melts that you vapourise in an oil-burner. These are cheap and light-weight.
Probably there are several tunes that are meaningful to you both. Make your own compilation, either on a CD or electronically, and sent this across the miles. Imagine your loved one kicking back, closing their eyes and getting lost in melody and memory.
4) SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO.
It may seem a long time away but it will arrive – that moment of reunion. Book an amazing event to anticipate. This could be a ride in a hot air balloon, tickets to a gig or tea at the Ritz. Send a print-out or photocopy for your lover to open on Christmas Day and cast both of your minds forwards to an exciting future.
5) MAKE SOMETHING YOURSELF.
You don’t have to be a whizz at crafts and sewing to make something individual that can be treasured. If you’re good at knitting, try a scarf or jumper. If painting or sketching is your thing, send a small picture that you’ve created especially. Candle-making, flower-pressing, embroidery – these are all talents that you can use. At the very least you can make an individual card and customize a tee-shirt with an iron-on motif that carries a message. The fact that you have spent time and taken trouble will be worth so much.
6) SOMETHING TO WEAR.
Socks and gloves aren’t original presents, but if they are selected with care they will keep your dear one wrapped in your love and be a constant reminder of your connection. A ring, bracelet or necklace does not have to be expensive and can be easy to pack and send.
7) A CHARM FOR LOVE AND LUCK.
A rose quartz heart, a tiny figure of an angel in a velvet pocket, a herbal pouch – even a well-chosen Christmas decoration – all of these can be turned into a charm, carrying good vibes to your dearest. Hold the object between your palms and pour all your love and hopes for the future into it. Even without realizing it, this will have a positive effect on your lover.
