People moving away, others moving in, new buildings going up and old ones coming down – maybe cherished countryside being taken over by housing. This can all cause real sorrow, especially if you have lived in your neighbourhood for a long time, and cherish every paving-stone or bush. But we all know that change is the only constant. This is part of life, and you will cope.
FEEL THE PAIN
For a while you are likely to feel really bad. Allow yourself a few days or weeks to experience any negative emotions, like sadness, rage and loss. It’s best not to bottle anything up, but rest assured you will not feel like this forever.
HAVE FAITH IN YOUR ABILITY TO ADAPT
Since the human race began we have had to cope with massive changes. Tribes have moved over the earth, as habitats disappeared, looking for new places to settle and thrive. Wars and natural disasters have affected many millions of people, and in parts of the globe this still happens. You, like every other human being, are hard-wired to adapt to change. It may be difficult to imagine now, but you will adjust – honest!
STOP TELLING YOURSELF NEGATIVE STORIES
If you keep going over and over all the negative events in your mind, you are programming yourself to be miserable. Have a good cry, by all means, but avoid telling yourself how awful it will be, how you will miss the old ways, that you’ll never be happy again, etc. That can only be true if you make it so.
SHARE YOUR FEELINGS
There are sure to be other people who feel the same. Have a good moan together, but don’t wallow, and encourage each other to carry on feeling sad. Instead, try to work out how you’re going to adapt and make the best of it. Try to think of some advantages.
MAKE FRIENDS WITH NEWCOMERS
If new people are moving in, try to make friends with them. Chances are they are finding change hard, too. Maybe new friendships await and you could even be very glad these shifts happened, as time goes by. Believe it!
READ UP SOME HAPPY STORIES
There are plenty of news items about people who fought the idea of strange in-comers and landscape changes, who then found that these differences enriched their life, in the end. Maybe your experience will be the same – give it a chance.
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL
Okay, there may be loads of things happening around you that you can’t influence. But what about the choices that are under your control? Make sure that your own dwelling is a true haven by giving it some TLC. Consider expanding your life – maybe by joining a club or enrolling for a course. This can channel your energies into something positive, rather than feeling resentful and regretful.
LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF
Events in the outside world can be useful triggers to self-awareness. Of course this can be very painful, but in the end it will make you a stronger person. Take the time to reflect, maybe seek counseling or practice mindfulness. Become more powerful, effectual and wise.
Of course coping with any sort of change can be very challenging, and it may feel like a deep loss.
