Halloween – or Samhain for pagans and witches alike – symbolises the day where the veil between this world and the one of the dead is at its thinnest. This is also Hecate’s day - Hecate is the Goddess of the veil between life and death, and is a sacred feminine power to witches being the Goddess of Witchcraft and magic.
Hecate - Crone of the three faces
Known as the crone of the three faces – maiden, mother and crone – Hecate appears in many Greek tales of mythology, the most notable being that of assisting Demeter in her search for kidnapped Persephone. As well as being a crone goddess, she’s also known to be the goddess of the crossroads, where people traditionally left offerings to call up her blessings.
Goddess of the Dark, or New moon, Hecate can be called upon to banish any negativity from a person’s life, be it sorrows or bad habits. A strong Goddess and mistakenly a scary one, she means business and is often one of the first Goddesses witches turn to when researching the craft.
Hecate is a very powerful dark Goddess but with a heart of understanding. She deals a lot with souls who have passed over, having been the only one allowed through the darkness of the veil to see Hades after he kidnapped Persephone.
It’s easy to think of her as a scary grandmother, and to a degree it’s true, but as much as she is wise and counsels when needed, she also honours your own choices. Because she can look three ways at once she casts a watchful eye over your actions so you can’t pull any tricks on her!
So how do we connect with the energies of Hecate? As with all Goddess energy you must be incredibly respectful but there are a few easier ways of showing that you wish to connect with her guidance.
- On Halloween, anoint and light a black candle in honour of those you have lost. You can inscribe a message on this if you wish, or simply write your loved ones’ names.
- At new moon, meditate upon Hecate’s energy and ask that she assist you or give you strength in banishing negativity from your life.
- Listen to a song or a piece of music which reminds you or puts you into the mind set of Hecate’s energy, and sit in quiet contemplation / meditation.
