We all know that life has never been so busy. Most of us moan about it, few of us have a clue what to do about it. And if you do know, chances are you haven’t listened to that voice of wisdom in your head. So stop for a moment, reflect for a while, and resolve to put some changes into practice, starting now.
1) BE IN THE NOW
Mindfulness is a buzz word, but ‘mindfulness’ isn’t something you practice once a week – or even once a day – sitting with your eyes closed. It is – or should be – a part of your life. Like so many practices, mindfulness can become a habit, if you commit yourself to it. Be aware when your mind is racing ahead with a hundred thoughts and lists of jobs. You do not need that. It is a useless waste of energy, for you are actually doing these jobs many times over, and mentally exhausting yourself before you even start. So if you catch yourself doing this, STOP. Throw yourself into something else, and if you’re doing something that leaves your mind free, like driving, then listen to music, the radio, learn a language with audio-recordings, listen to an audio-book – anything that enables you to stop running ahead of yourself. Better still, reflect on all the good things in your life and cultivate internal peace. You can do it!
2) GET UP AND MOVE
Sitting for long periods is unhealthy, of course. As well as being bad news for your body, it also affects your mood. Hormones are altered by a stooping posture, so stand, stretch and walk at regular intervals. If you find it hard to remember to do this, set a timer and shift yourself every half hour. Look after yourself in other ways, too. Eat well, rest well, and enjoy a little pampering now and then.
3) SET BOUNDARIES
What is the prize for staying at your desk half an hour longer than everyone else, answering emails that ping your way one minute before close of play? Answer: poor emotional and physical health. End your working day on time. This will mean you have the down time you need, making you more efficient in the long run. Afraid that you won’t be appreciated, or that you will fail? That’s a matter of your self-esteem and self-confidence, and it won’t be made ok by overwork. Our readers at The Circle can help you with this.
4) BE INSPIRED!
We all need something in life to inspire us. Do you have a hobby, a belief, a creative outlet? This makes life more meaningful, enabling you to flow through all the other stuff and keep things in proportion. If you don’t have this, ask yourself what you love, and keep asking until you get an answer that works.
5) BE KIND
Doing good works is one fabulous way to feel great about yourself. This may be through simple acts like holding doors open, carrying bags or offering your seat to someone who needs it. Better still, volunteer for a charitable or environmental project. The glow you get will be priceless.
