Mindfulness

A deeper awareness of yourself, others and the world around you allows you to switch off the
auto-pilot within and make the right decisions for a brighter future.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

So many of us with busy lives tend to operate on auto-pilot. We rush about our working life, our home and our family getting things done because we all have responsibilities. Yet while we may all be part of a practical and hardworking generation, evidence shows that the overall decrease in mental health is an issue. Life is different nowadays compared to when we were young. Children and teenagers are dealing with an increase in difficult situations and sadly this is resulting in struggles to cope. It has recently been in the news that ‘Mindfulness’ is being taught in a select number of schools in the UK, testing a way to equip the younger generation in dealing with their own feelings to support their mental health. The feedback so far is incredibly positive. Mindfulness is awareness. It makes people think about what is going on internally and externally. It encourages awareness of the world around them and their own thoughts and feelings, instead of falling into a life of tunnel vision where stress easily accumulates. Being aware of how we currently ‘feel’ is so important. It gives us the space to process our thoughts and set them free if they are not important or real.

Mindfulness doesn’t stop stress happening - it just helps you to understand your relationship with stress therefore changing your reaction and reducing a negative response.

HOW DOES IT HELP?

Mindfulness allows you to become aware of the present time, instead of constantly thinking about tomorrow or the future and worrying about events to come. Similar to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, it makes you focus on the here and now, understanding when thoughts and feelings are not necessarily helpful and eventually giving you the ability to train your mind. The current and lifelong effect that learning mindfulness can have on your life is limitless and at a huge advantage.

WHAT CAN IT HELP?

LET GO OF STRESS

Often called ‘present-centeredness’, mindfulness makes you become more aware of the current moment through your senses such as sound, touch and smell. It makes you focus on present time instead of revisiting the past or fearing the future. Stress plays a huge part in our everyday lives but it is only how we manage it that depends on how it has an actual effect on us. Mindfulness teaches us to look at everything in perspective and to not focus on the ‘what if’s’ – to just accept the here and now and to live in that moment. You may be stuck in traffic and late for a meeting which would normally increase stress levels, but there’s nothing you can do about it – what is the point in getting stressed? It shows you that you can let go of obsessive unhelpful thoughts and feelings that have become an automatic reaction to stressful situations. It makes you consider that most situations are not worth getting stressed over. Mindfulness doesn’t stop stress happening, it just helps you to understand your relationship with stress therefore changing your reaction and reducing a negative response. It trains your mind to learn how to think positively which can manifest your dreams, hopes and wishes into reality.

What may have been a big deal before may indeed be fairly insignificant in the grand scheme.

PUTTING INTO PRACTICE

Mindfulness is about taking notice of your thoughts and feelings, not adding to them or judging them, just observing them almost from afar.  Mindfulness can be created through giving yourself the space and time to connect with your body. For some people learning how to do this can be difficult but using a technique such as meditation is a good way to start. Meditation is simply allowing yourself to sit in a quiet place with your eyes closed, focusing on your breathing and relaxing every part of your body. If your mind wanders to thoughts, focus back on your breathing so that you are emptying your mind as much as possible. Yoga and Tai Chi are also good ways to connect and create awareness within. Once you can empty your mind and be at peace with yourself, you can then observe your thoughts and feelings more clearly.  To create mindfulness, you must teach yourself to look at how you think and feel and put it into perspective. What may have been a big deal before may indeed be fairly insignificant in the grand scheme.

AWAKEN!

Practising these simple steps of mindfulness will liberate you in being able to focus on the here and now. Look at life in perspective and understand how thoughts and feelings can overwhelmingly take over our lives or be blown out of proportion. A deeper awareness of yourself, others and the world around you allows you to switch off the auto pilot within and make the right decisions for a brighter future.
