Lost your talent? Don’t panic. The first thing you need to realise is that you can’t lose a talent, any more than you can lose your ability to walk, talk or smile. Your talent is natural, and part of you. If your talent has stopped expressing itself, this does not mean it’s gone. For some reason it isn't emerging now, so, like a moody friend, it may need some time out, and some coaxing.
ACCEPT YOUR TALENT IS HAVING A ‘HOLIDAY'
Deep within your subconscious, your talent is calling for a rest. You may have heard of artists or creative people who go on and on without respite, but everyone is different and it’s not fair to expect this of yourself. So don’t force yourself. Try to relax and be assured that your talent will come out again when it’s ready.
HAVE A CHANGE OF SCENE
Maybe things have gone stale. You can’t expect inspiration to keep coming and coming if it isn't fed. Try going away for a break, altering your routine or even changing your job. You could also take up a new hobby. If you are bored, your talent won’t surface.
TRY ALTERING YOUR TECHNIQUE OR APPROACH
Experiment with different ways of using your talent. Check out other creative people and their achievements – don’t be afraid to imitate for that’s how many of the greatest works of art came into being However experienced you are, don’t be too proud to go back to classes. Sometimes this can stimulate your abilities.
ASK YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR LIFE
How satisfied are you with your life in general? Some people have found that being unhappy makes them more creative, but this isn’t always the case. If you are depressed, it’s well-known that depression is often a prelude to a burst of fresh creativity, so be patient.
ARE YOU REPRESSING CERTAIN FEELINGS?
Are you pretending to yourself that your relationship is fine when it isn't? Are you putting up with a job you detest, telling yourself it’s all for the best? Then you may be paying a higher price than you realise. It’s rarely possible to be selective about repression and the chances are you’re pushing down your inspiration as part of the package. If you are repressing feelings, be honest with yourself. Perhaps you need to move on in some way. This could release your talent.
If you have enjoyed and relied on your talent, to find it’s gone can be scary. But fear will keep your talent away. Do relax and have faith.
MEDITATE, OR TRY HYPNOTHERAPY
