MEET THE MOON, THE SUN AND JUDGEMENT
Your journey through the Tarot continues with the seventh group of three Major Arcana cards. Each of the Major Arcana cards shows a symbol of an archetypal force that shapes existence and also operates within the subconscious mind. As you become aware of these forces, working with them to understand yourself and the world, you can become more effectual and fulfilled. The symbols can be used as a focus for meditation as well as divination, as they show what the future may hold. The better you get to know the symbols the more clearly they will speak to you.
18 THE MOON
The Moon shines down from the night sky, her familiar face seeming to watch the land below. Humans have made up many stories to explain the changing face of the Moon, as she goes through her phases. She is the Goddess, Diana or Selene in her bright phases, Hecate in her darkness. The Moon taught our ancestors about cycle. Today she still teaches about mysterious rhythms, the unseen pull that moves the tides and that you can feel in your own body and emotions. The Moon is your intuition, your ability to respond to the instinctual and the ‘irrational’ and also to empathise, sensing what others are feeling. The Moon is your connection with the rest of life on the planet. She is also your dreams and your imagination. In a spread the Moon is a warning to beware the dangers of illusion. The psychic realms hold wisdom, but you need to be careful not to deceive yourself.
19 THE SUN
The Sun is the brilliant giver of life to our planet – it dominates the sky with its magnificent rays. All civilisations have worshipped Sun gods or goddesses, blessing us with light and warmth. The rhythms of the days, and the seasons have always regulated human actions, and so the Sun is seen as ruler. It is the light of reason and conscious awareness, bringing both inspiration and clear thought. The Sun is your sense of ‘Self’, your uniqueness, your expressiveness. He is also your power to be free, to plan and make clear goals, to seek and manifest your inner essence. In a spread the Sun brings success, achievement and fulfillment. The Sun reminds you how brilliant you are and how much vitality you have within, and assures you that you can solve problems and triumph.
The archangel of Judgement overshadows the sky, blowing what may appear to be the trumpet of Doom. But Judgement is not condemnation and punishment – it is a call to wake up to what life is all about. Yes. There is ‘karma’, but karma is cause and effect, that’s all, showing you that what you do comes back to you. This is empowering, because it shows that you are architect of your own reality. There are more things in Heaven and Earth – can you see this? If you choose to be enlightened, then of course you will judge yourself, and that judgement will guide you to progress. Judgement is your own weighing-up of yourself. It is your knowledge of the Divine within you, and your wish to develop this. In a spread this card reminds you of the importance of being self-aware, of reflecting on your motives and being mindful.
WORKING WITH THE CARDS
To develop your own understanding and relationship with the cards, spend a while meditating upon them. Relax, look at the image on the card of your choice and then in your imagination enter the world of the image. Journey with The Moon, The Sun and Judgement – what do they show you? What can you learn about their meanings and how they manifest? Make notes of your thoughts, for they will be invaluable in your work with the Tarot.
A SIMPLE QUESTION
Use these three cards on their own for some basic insight. Ask about a plan you have in mind – choose something that is important to you but not life-changing, because that could cause you to be tense and to lose the playful attitude that is helpful for divination. (Reverence with mirth always works best!). Shuffle the cards and deal one to guide you. If you deal The Moon, ask yourself in what way you should use your instincts and/or in what way you could be kidding yourself. Maybe you need to refine your intuition and test out your assumptions. If you deal the Sun, you have some great opportunities - how can you use your talents and become more fully conscious, directing your life and triumphing over obstacles? If Judgement appears, do you need to wake up to something about yourself and take a deeper responsibility? Do you need to review your life path? Some Tarot readers interpret a card that is upside-down as the force working negatively, or delayed, but others place no importance on this – you will eventually form your own views. For now, take note of how your first use of these cards works out, so you can learn and progress. You can incorporate the other cards you have learnt about when you feel ready.
