Most of us share an intense bond with our animals so it is natural to feel devastated by grief when a pet dies. Some people may not understand the depth of feeling that you have for your pet but you should never feel guilty or ashamed about grieving for an animal companion..
Pets can be a beloved member of the family and when they die you can feel a significant, even traumatic sense of loss, much like that for a person. Grief can be complicated by the role that the animal played in your life. A working animal such as a guide dog or horse, you will not only be grieving for the loss of a companion but also for the loss of a co-worker or loss of independence. If you cared for the pet through a protracted illness, you grew to love them more. If you lived alone and the pet was your only companion, coming to terms with the loss will be harder there may even be a sense of guilt especially if you had to show the ultimate love and give permission for the animal to be put to sleep. Know that the veterinarian would only do this if they thought it was the right thing for the pet to do so to prevent suffering.
Rituals can help healing, therefore a “funeral” can help you and the rest of the family express their feelings. Create a legacy, prepare a memorial, plant a tree or compile a scrapbook of memories and pictures to celebrate the life you shared.
If you have other pets try to maintain normal routine as surviving pets can also experience loss it may be distressed by your sorrow. Keeping to their routine or increasing exercise and play times, this will not only benefit the surviving pets but will elevate your thoughts as well.
Spirit may well help by bringing another animal to you often as a stray or through a re-homing programme if this happens then know it is meant to be. You may well hear your pets or sense your pets after they have passed this is due to the fact that they have no concept of death and stay in the atmosphere longer before going back to spirit.
