Life is full of choices, and sometimes we make the wrong ones. Maybe it’s the relationship you walked away from, the job offer you turned down, the wonderful travel opportunity you were too busy to take – it could even be the lottery ticket you didn’t buy, and then the numbers came up! That’s life – but if you’re stuck with this hanging over you, some serious work is needed.
RECOGNISING THAT ‘LOST CHANCE’ FEELING
Ordinary life is disappointing. You feel hollow and empty. Nothing is quite good enough and you find yourself drifting into fantasy and ‘what if’. It seems it hard to give your best to any task, because you yearn to be doing something else. Your enthusiasm has gone, and you may often want to cry because the sense of loss is overwhelming.
SELF BLAME CAN BE THE HARDEST OF ALL
Probably you’re angry at yourself, continually kicking yourself and wishing desperately you could turn back time. You may even panic sometimes – it’s as if you’ve got on the wrong train, hurtling in the wrong direction.
IT ISN’T AS BAD AS IT SEEMS
Lets face it – you are wallowing a bit, and being negative. This isn’t as bad as it seems. Any anger you feel at yourself could be causing you to punish yourself with continual regret. You may not be able to see a way out at the moment, but this has happened for a reason and a meaningful pattern will eventually show itself. Hang on in there, and be hopeful.
ASK YOURSELF WHY
Understanding is vital – if this was a lost chance why did you lose it? Did you make a bad choice through lack of confidence, fear or laziness? Could this even have been your instinct, saving you from something that wasn’t truly right? If it’s ‘your fault’ this can be the hardest to get over. Be clear about what happened and take responsibility, which is different entirely from simply blaming yourself.
LIFE HAS TAUGHT YOU THIS LESSON FOR A REASON
Don’t make a tough situation worse. Learn from it, grow and move on because there will be many other chances and next time you will make the best of them.
JUST BAD LUCK?
Maybe you really had no control over the situation, it was just ‘bad luck’ and it seems like the Universe is out to get you. But probably there is no such thing as ‘bad luck’ – it’s more the case that all is part of a pattern and the significance will become clear further on down the line.
SEARCH FOR MEANINGS
You won’t be able to see any meanings if you trudge along, feeling sorry for yourself. Furthermore, that annoying phrase ‘you make your own luck’ is true! Dwell on negativity and not only do you attract it, you miss the good stuff that’s offered. Don’t pass on any other opportunities, small or large, by being a misery.
THROW OUT UNHELPFUL ASSUMPTIONS
Just because you imagine how great it would be if you’d not lost that chance, does not mean it would definitely have been great. Accept that you truly do not know. Maybe you have been saved from something – this could be a bad accident or a difficult situation. Choose instead to imagine a good future for yourself.
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!
Here’s another cliché that could make you mad, but this also is true. What about all the good things that you have, in abundance, that you probably take for granted? Make a habit at the end of each day, of listing half a dozen, even if it’s only a smile from a stranger or a supermarket bargain. Just because you aren’t where you wish you were, doesn’t mean you aren’t still a very fortunate person.
Of course regrets can be stubborn. You owe it to yourself to do your utmost to let them go, and this may require a push from someone knowledgeable.
