WRITE YOUR STORY
The old habit of keeping a journal, favoured by earlier generations, is very therapeutic. Write down how you feel, and what happens to you. Write this as if it is a story about someone else. This can help you get a better perspective.
MAKE A LITTLE GAME OUT OF SAYING ‘NO’
Feeling pressurized into saying ‘yes’, for whatever reason, is a major cause of stress. Practice saying ‘no’ in situations where it isn’t important, such as when dealing with cold callers. Gradually you will feel more in control of your life.
BOOK A BREAK
When you’re busy going away can create more stress. However, it’s essential. Get a breath of sea air. Walk the hills. Do something out of the ordinary and you’ll get an energy boost, as well as a break.
You don’t have to work out ferociously. Just a brisk walk will up your feel-good hormones and increase your fitness.
RESPECT YOUR ZZZZ
Sleeping is good for you and making do with very little sleep doesn’t prove you’re strong – it proves you’re stupid. So get regular early nights and power-nap in the afternoon, if you want. You’ll get far more done.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Are there foods that don’t quite agree with you? Places that make you feel unwell, habits that get you down? What about those little aches and pains? Pay attention to your body, before it makes you listen by becoming ill. Do positive things for your health, too, such as being tested for food intolerance, getting a massage or having energy-boosting acupuncture.
TURN OFF THE TECHNOLOGY
Make sure that you have time each day where you turn off your mobile or tablet and just interact with your environment, and the people in it. Encourage others to do the same. Mealtimes are a great opportunity for this, but you should also switch off an hour or so before going to bed. There is evidence that radiation affects us physically. Certainly the mental effects of being permanently connected to everyone and everything are disturbing. But the power to protect yourself is there, by pressing a button.
CHOOSE YOUR COMPANY WITH CARE
If you spend time with miserable, moaning, negative and stressy types then you aren’t giving yourself much chance to feel good. Hang out with people who are up-beat, chilled and also kind and encouraging. It will make the world of difference.
WEIGH UP YOUR EMOTIONS
Do you often feel resentful, jealous and full of pent-up anger? Do yourself a favour and work at unloading all that stuff, because it’s only hurting you.
