Effect on the spirit
Improved health through meditation
In traditional Chinese medicine, problems with health have always been associated with either a lack of energy or an unhealthy or blocked flow of energy through the body. The meditation teacher, Juergen Klammer, said that both of these problems can be relieved by regular meditation. The reason being that through meditation, the consciousness is refocused and then redirected to increase self-awareness. Therefore the loss of energy that had been caused by permanent instability of the spirit, and the resulting turbulent train of thought can be halted.
The flow of energy can be increased in various ways. In meditation you learn not only to concentrate the mind, but also direct energy to different parts of the body. The breathing is directly linked with the energy flow. Klammer assures us that it is possible to calm your breathing, which as a result of fear or tension is halting or jerky, and therefore raise the energy flowing through your body.
Through following the very specific sequence of movements of Tai chi, yoga, or Qi-gong the energy flow will be channelled through the body to harmonise the meridian points.
Silent Meditation
The practise of silent meditation is an integral part of the Hindu and Buddist teachings. It is traditionally practised in the Lotus position and has become widely known as a result of the ever-increasing popularity of yoga. Christians, on the contrary, are more familiar with the meditative qualities of the spoken word, as in the Lord’s Prayer and the Eucharist.
Musical Meditation
Many students make use of rhythmic sounds and music to help them to meditate. Christians are familiar with choral music, and Catholics pray with the Rosary. In the Hindu and Buddist traditions mantas are quietly spoken or sung. In other cultures, as with the Islamic Mystics or the Sufis, mediations are danced, with a slow monotonous movement, accompanied by drums and various other percussion instruments.
